                                    OCCUPATION OF NEWPORT POINT.

                          STAMPEDE OF FUGITIVES TO FT. MONROE.

A NEW LEVY OF 100,000 MEN.

                                                            Washington, May 29th.

            The federal pickets were fired at last night 12 miles inward from the outer camp. Gen. Batler [Butler] with 2,500 men including the 3rd Mass. Regiment have taken possession of an important point below Fortress Monroe have planted a battery commanding the Bay and have commence intrenchm.nts. [intrenchment] Important despatches were sent to General Butler last night by a special steamer.

            Washington is unusually quiet.

                                                                                                BALTIMORE [BALTIMORE], May 29.

            Steamer Georgiana has arrived from Fortress Monroe. She says a small steamer from Norfolk under a flag of truces has just landed over 100 refugees on the Cumberland, mostly the wives and children of the laborers in the navy yard. They state that there are from 7 to 9000 troops at Norfolk and Portsmouth.

            General Beauregard had not arrived at Norfolk. Perfect gloom and terror prevaded the community.
