CRAVENSVILLE   A post village of Daviess county, Grand River township, on Grand river, 4 miles from Gallatin, the county seat, 275 miles from St. Louis, and 200 from Jefferson City. It was first settled by Mormons, the post office being established in the winter of 1840. There is one stage line to Bethany, via Pattonsburg, distance 25 miles. The town contains one district school, three churches, viz., Baptist, Cumberland Presbyterian and Methodist, four general stores, one agricultural warehouse, one carding machine, two distillers, two dry good stores, one fancy goods, one grocery, two hotels, one planing mill, two nurseries. The chief products are corn, wheat, oats and tobacco. Timber, bur, white, black and red oak and black walnut. Minerals, iron, lead and coal. The average price of cultivated lands is $25, and uncultivated $10 per acre. Population 278.  (Missouri State Gazetteer..., 1860)
