CALHOUN A post village of Henry county, Tabo township, situated on Tabo creek, 12 miles from Clinton, the county seat, 210 miles from St. Louis, and 90 miles from Jefferson City. A stage line runs to Georgetown, 31 miles distant, and one to Clinton, 12 miles. The post office has been established about 30 years. The village contains one Male and Female Seminary, one Masonic lodge, viz., Grover Lodge, No. 4, one Good Templars' lodge, one church, two attorneys, one boot and shoe maker, one blacksmith, two carpenters, one carding machine, one wagon maker, one cabinet maker, one dentist, two drug stores, one saw and grist mill, four general stores, two hotels, one harness maker, one gunsmith, three physicians, one stove store, and one cigar store. Cultivated land is worth $12.50 per acre, and uncultivated $5.00. Chief products corn and hay; timber, oak, walnut and hickory. Population 400. (Missouri State Gazetteer..., 1860)
