CARLYLE A post village, capital of Clinton county, on Kaskaskia river and on the border of a highly fertile prairie, 95 miles south from Springfield. The river is navigable by small boats in high stages of water. It contains a commodious court house, several stores, and manufacturing is carried on to some considerable extent The Ohio & Mississippi railroad runs through this place. Oliver A.
