CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, situated in the eastern part of Illinois, and drained by Kaskaskia, Embarrass, Sangamon, and Vermilion rivers. Area, 792 square miles. CHAMPAIGN COUTNTY ls situated in the east part of the state, and has an area of about 880 square miles. It is drained by the head streams of the Kaskaskia, Embarrass and Vermilion rivers, and is traversed in the north-west part by the north fork of Sangamon river. The surface consists of an open plain or prairie, slightly rolling, and interspersed with small groves of timber. This county comprises a part of the Grand Prairie. The soil is deep, fertile and durable. The staples are corn, wheat, oats, hay and pork. The Illinois Central (Chicago branch) and the Great Western railroads pass through this county, and have added largely to its wealth and population. Capital, Urbana. Population, 3,678.
