CLINTON, county, Iowa Ter. Situated in the N. part of the ter., having the Mississippi r. for its E. boundary. Drained by Wabesipinica r. and its branches, on the s, and on the n. by Prairie cr.. Deep cr. and other branches of Macoquetais r. Capital, Camanche. There were in 1840, neat cattle 865, sheep 58, swine 2,007; wheat 5,413 bush, produced, Ind. corn 18,515, oats 3,555, potatoes 17,574; 3 stores, cap. $11,350;  2 grist m., 3 saw m. CLINTON COUNTY, situated on the east boundary of Iowa, on the west aide of Mississippi river, with Wabenpinica river on the south. Area. 1,012 square miles. Seat of justice, Camanche. Pop. in 1840, 821; in 1850, 2922.  (Fanning's, 1853)

CLINTON COUNTY.   De Witt, the county seat of Clinton, was settled in 1 841 — some portions of the county in 1836. The present population of the county is 7500 — of De Witt, 500.
Four churches — Methodist, Congregational, Roman Catholic, and one union of the Baptists and Disciples.
Three newspapers printed in the county, at Lyons, Camanche, and Fulton City. One needed in De Witt.
Good public and select schools in every town of the county, and in good condition.
In De Witt are two saw-mills and one grist-mill. Being the centre of a very excellent grain market, which will soon have an outlet by the Lyons B. B., it becomes capitalists to erect a large flouring-mill at or near De Witt.
Clinton consists of beautiful, rich, rolling prairie, interspersed with groves of timber. "Second-hand lands can be bought on better terms in Clinton than any county in the State, according to their true value."   (Iowa As It Is in 1855; A Gazetteer for Citizens..., 1855)
