LINNEUS The county seat of Linn county, situated six miles from the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, 325 miles from St. Louis, and 150 miles from Jefferson City. This town was settled in the year 1836, by Col. John Holland. There are two stage routes from this place, viz., one to Brunswick, 35 miles, and to Milton 25 miles. The chief products are corn, wheat, hemp and tobacco—the timber oak and walnut, the minerals coal and lead. The average price of uncultivated land is $5 to $10 per acre, cultivated from $11 to $20. The town contains three churches, one Methodist, Christian and Presbyterian, one weekly newspaper, the Linneus Democratic Bulletin, published every Wednesday by Brawner & Williams, one Masonic Lodge, Jackson Lodge, No. 82, one I.O. O. F., Linneus Lodge, 61, one manufacturer and dealer in agricultural implements, one ambrotype artist, four attorneys at law, two notaries public, two blacksmiths, one boot and shoe dealer, three carpenters, one carriage and wagon maker, one brick maker, two cabinet makers, one druggist, one dry goods store, five general stores, one gunsmith, one jewelry, one livery stable, two grocers, one harness maker, two hotels, two painters, four physicians, one sash, door and blind manufacturer, one printing office, one stove and tin ware dealer.
