POPE COUNTY Is situated in the south part of the state, and has an area of 370 square miles. The Ohio river, which separates it from Kentucky, forms the south-east boundary. The county is also drained by Lusk and Big Bay creeks. The surface is rolling, and the soil in many parts is very fertile. Corn, oats, grass, cattle and swine are the staples. It contains about 40 churches and has a large number of pupils attending public schools. Mineral springs, also lead and iron, exist to a great extent throughout the county. The Vincennes and Paducah railroad, just finished, crosses the state. Capital, Golconda, Population, about 7,000. (Hawes' Illinois State Gazetteer...,1859)
