ALBANY The county seat of Gentry county, is beautifully situated on Grand river, about 325 miles from St. Louis. A post office was established here about twelve years ago. There are seven stage routes running from this place, viz.: To St. Joseph 50 miles; Kingston, 60 miles; Princeton, 45 miles; Linda, 80 miles; Winterset, 100 miles; Rosehill, 20 miles; and Philander, 10 miles. It has one weekly newspaper, viz., the Albany Courier, published by De Haven & Deming, and issued Fridays, one high school, and one free school, a Masonic lodge, (Athens Lodge, No. 127,) two churches, seven general stores, two drug stores, two steam flouring mills, two steam saw mills, one livery stable, and two hotels. Average price of cultivated land $12 per acre; uncultivated land $5 per acre; timber, oak and walnut; mineral, coal; chief products, corn, oats, grass, potatoes, &c. Population 500.
