BLOOMFIELD  The county seat of Stoddard county, about 150 miles from St. Louis, in Carter township. Contains one Missionary Baptist and one Southern Methodist Church, one Masonic lodge, viz., Bloomfield No. 153, a Seminary and one free school.  The projected railroad of Fulton and Cairo will, when completed, touch at this point.  The present population is 1,000.  County Sheriff, James Dowdy.  (Missouri State Gazetteer..., 1860)
