CALHOUN COUNTY   This county was organized in 1855, and is situated in the western interior of the State, in the fourth tier of counties from the northern boundary of the State, and the fourth from the Missouri River. It is bounded on the north by the County of Pocahontas, east by Webster, south by Greene and Carroll, and west by Sac.
The lands of this county are good for grain and grass. There is but little timber. The western and southern portions are drained by Camp and Lake Creeks, and other branches of the Raccoon River. There are several small lakes in the northern and also in the southern sections. The DuBuque and Sioux City Railroad is designed to pass through this county.
LAKE CITY, in the southern interior of the county is the present seat of justice.   (Hair's Iowa State Gazetteer..., 1865)
