GALLATIN   The county seat of Daviess county, Gallatin township; is pleasantly situated in the midst of a rich farming county, 300 miles from St. Louis, and 180 from Jefferson City.  It contains three churches, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist; one Masonic lodge, Daviess No. 116; one academy in a flourishing condition, and a common school.  The health of the town is good, and the inhabitants noted for industry and enterprise.  Population 800.   (Missouri State Gazetteer..., 1860)
