HAMILTON, a county in the S. part of Illinois, has an area of 395 square miles. It is drained by the Skillett fork of Little Wabash river, and the N. fork of Saline creek. The county consists partly of prairie and partly of timbered land. The soil is moderately fertile. Indian corn, oats, grass, and pork are the staples. In 1850 it produced 242,955 bushels of corn; 28,764 of oats, and 48,055 pounds of butter. It contained 13 churches, and 1468 pupils attending public schools. Capital, McLeansborough Population, 6302.
