JASPER COUNTY, situated in the southeasterly part of Illinois. Area, 475 square miles. Soil poor. Seat of justice, Newton. Pop. in 1840, 1,472; in 1850, 3,220. (Fanning's, 1853)

JASPER COUNTY  Is situated in the south-east part of the state, and has an area of 440 square miles. It is intersected by Embarras river, an affluent of the Wabash. The surface is level or nearly so, and in some places quite flat. It contains some very fertile prairies. Corn, wheat, oats, cattle and swine are the staples. It contains several fine churches, and has about 800 pupils attending public schools. Capital, Newton. Population, 4,800. (Hawes' Illinois State Gazetteer...,1859)
