LOGAN COUNTY  Is situated near the centre of the state, and has an area of 625 square miles. It is intersected by Salt Creek, an affluent of Sangamon river, and also drained by Kickapoo and Sugar creeks. The surface is level and is mostly destitute of forests; the soil is fertile. Corn, wheat, oats, potatoes, and pork are the staples. Several creeks in the county are bordered with narrow strips of timber, and the deficiency of wood in other parts is made up by an abundance of stone and coal. The St Louis, Alton and Chicago railroads intersect the county. Capital, Lincoln. Population, 9,000.  (Hawes' Illinois State Gazetteer...,1859)
