Corn, wheat, oats, potatoes, and pork are the staples. Several creeks in the county are bordered with narrow strips of timber, and the deficiency of wood in other parts is made up by an abundance of stone and coal. The St Louis, Alton and Chicago railroads intersect the county. Capital, Lincoln. Population, 9,000. (Hawes' Illinois State Gazetteer...,1859)
