MONTGOMERY COUNTY, situated toward the south part of Illinois. Area, 684 square miles. Face of the country even; soil fertile. Seat of justice, Hillsborough. Pop. in 1830, 2,953; in 1840, 4,490; in 1850, 6,276. (Fanning's, 1853)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY   Is situated in the south-west central part of the state, and has an area of 690 square miles. It is drained by the east and west forks of Shoal creek, an affluent of Kaskaskia river. The surface is undulating and partially covered with forest. The soil is fertile and under good cultivation. Corn wheat, oats and pork are the staples. It contains a number of churches and has about 2000 pupils attending public schools. It is intersected by the Terre Haute and Alton railroad. The valuation of taxable property in the county in 1857 was $3,241,941, being an increase of $977,589, on that of the previous year.
