SHAWNEETOWN  A thriving post town of Gallatin county, on the Ohio river, 9 miles below the mouth of the Wabash, and 260 below Louisville, Kentucky.  It derives its name from the Shawnee tribe of Indians who once occupied this site. The landing for steamboats is good, and large quantities of provisions and produce are shipped from this place, which is one of the most commercial importance in the south-east part of the state. It was once the county seat. A newspaper is published here.  L. M. Healy, Postmaster.   (Hawes' Illinois State Gazetteer..., 1859)
